Sam Plunkett Single Vineyard Series Tait Hamilton Barrel Select Shiraz 2020
About the wine
One-of-a-kind red from the ultimate Shiraz region of VIC.
- This is a superb example of a big rich Shiraz from the most prestigious Shiraz region in Victoria — Heathcote. It’s named in honour of the hardworking grower, Tait Hamilton and his pristine grapes.
- Smelling of divinely dark fruits like blackberries, black pepper and smokey oak, this is a bold, full-bodied wine with buckets of ripe fruit flavours and a hint of sweet spice. There's also a dark chocolate character from the high percentage of new oak. The tannins feel plush and supple but with a grainy edge.
- A great wine like this, from premium grapes, made by a talented winemaker and matured in exceptional oak from American Shenandoah forests for 14 months has to be tried at least once in your life.
Best before
I happily drink this wine as a youngster - I love the combination of plushness and brightness on the palate, the intensity of flavour, and the balance. But with its crazy low pH, and the great intensity of flavour this wine has an impressive ability to age.
Serving advice

Food match
We have a great butcher in Avenel, and ideally we'd have a piece of aged beef from Scotty to go with this Shiraz. I'm a ho-hum cook (unlike my amazing wife Bron), but am okay around the barbecue. I really like beef off the kamado smoker/barbeque (I had to look up what this sort of barbie is called, the best known brand is the Big Green Egg) with some hickory on the coals - the wood smoke is a lovely match for the sweet smokey oak character in Tait's Shiraz. Just thinking about this has me thinking I'll fire up the barbie tonight and get into a bottle of the Barrel Select Shiraz!
