Father and son team Dayne & Marc Sherwood blend two generations of winemaking philosophy into every wine they create. Dayne brings more than 35 years of traditional experience and Marc brings the enthusiasm and innovation of an up-and-coming young gun.
Backed by thousands of Angels, they’re making elegant wines from their vineyards in the stunning Waipara Valley, New Zealand. Each one packed with personality and a strong social and environmental conscience.
Their wines, Vinity Generations, is dedicated to the crew who’ve done the hard yards in the vineyard, the evolution of winemaking and, most of all, to you who have made these wines possible.
Dayne & Marc Sherwood's Story
Dayne is a NZ Pinot Noir trailblazer — one of the country’s first university-trained winemakers.
His burning desire to learn everything about wine led him to postgraduate diploma in winemaking the first year it was available.
But whilst his peers stuck to tried and tested Kiwi favourites, this far-sighted genius had a different grape in his sights. He was out to tame the temperamental Pinot Noir.
“Everyone thought we were mad, no one in New Zealand drank Pinot Noir, let alone grew it,” he told us.
“But I was in awe of the variety. I’d seen the results of this grape in climates and soils very similar to here in New Zealand. And I knew with a little careful planning in the vineyard, this variety could become one of New Zealand’s most loved wines.”
And without further hesitation, he planted 20 acres of vines on a Canterbury block and their family wine business was born. It was 1987.
Dayne won his first gold medal and trophy for Pinot Noir in 1993. His career (and reputation) went from strength to strength, catching the eye of reviewers and earning him more medals. In 2013 and 2014, his wine scored gold at the New World Wine Awards.
In the meantime, Dayne’s youngest, Marc, was growing up fast, earning pocket money through little jobs around the winery. He hated it.
But what was a chore when he was a kid got right under his skin. By the time he left school, he’d signed up for a winemaking degree. Within a few years, he was clocking up vintages in California, the Okanagan Valley in Canada, and South Australia.
It was only a matter of time before he would partner up with Dad to create something marvellous together.
Marc represents the new wave of young winemakers bringing fresh ideas to the sheds.
His intention is to build on the experience and knowledge of his father and develop wines that embrace his own personality and natural techniques that add a sense of place.
