A distinguished winemaker determined to make the world a better place
- JP’s stellar career reaches back to 2000, but he almost walked away when corporate constraints became too much. Now, given a second chance by Angels, he’s walking to the beat of his own drum while crafting the boutique, cool-climate wines he loves.
- Extensive experience in the industry means JP has forged strong relationships that help him secure grapes from award-winning Aussie vineyards. Without being tied to one location, he’s able to select premium fruit that ensures every Enfant Terrible drop reflects the best that its vintage has to offer.
- As environmental advocate, JP handcrafts his wines using minimal intervention and sustainable techniques. Through SeedTheChange, he plants a tree for every case of wine sold – a mission that’s brilliant for Angels and for the Earth!
James-Paul Marin's Story
Selling his wines across three continents and regularly travelling the globe as a flying winemaker provided James-Paul with an incredible breadth of knowledge, but pouring his energy into minimal-intervention, cool-climate wine is where his passion truly lies.
James-Paul (we call him JP around here) has a vast and varied list of wine experience and accolades to his name, from working on the team at McLaren Vale’s Scarpantoni Estate that took out the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2007 to starting his own wine company, Red Deer Station in 2012 and being named one of the Top 100 New International Wine Brands in Shanghai.
But in 2015, with his wine company under pressure from corporate investors and the sense of enjoyment in his craft at stake, JP walked away from it all and his talents were almost lost for good. Rather than compromising on the quality and authenticity of his wine, he made the difficult decision to relinquish control of his company… a move that ultimately led this proud independent winemaker to the Naked family in 2016!
Today, JP happily walks to the beat of his own drum, sourcing fruit from family, friends and respected industry connections. Without being tied to one vineyard, he’s able to pick and choose premium grapes to ensure each release of his Enfant Terrible wines reflects the best of that vintage.
As a lifelong surfer, JP is an environmental advocate and partner of SeedTheChange, planting a tree in a third world country for every case of wine sold. So, while he may well be an Enfant Terrible – a person who behaves in an unconventional or controversial way – it’s a mission that’s brilliant, for Angels and the Earth!
