Waipara Valley winemaking genius!
Nicky’s parents, Peter and Felicity, chose the tiny, unique Waipara Valley in New Zealand’s South Island to plant their longed for vineyard. Pruning the vines on crisp winter mornings ignited Nicky’s love affair with wine.
The Parish family continued to grow grapes for the best producers in New Zealand for 10 years, but yearned for greater security and their own name on the label. With Nicky now a seasoned winemaker, Angels gave her the amazing opportunity to work with and learn from her father.
To this day, Angels allow Nicky to grow the business and spend time with young family. With Peter taking a well-earned governorship role, Nicky’s picking up the baton managing more of the business. Although Peter is never far away (the local golf course) if she needs some advice!
Vineyard Location
Nicky Parish's Story
Parents Peter and Felicity chose the tiny, unique Waipara Valley in New Zealand’s South Island to plant their longed for vineyard. Nicky’s first introduction to the block was pruning the vines on crisp winter mornings. It was the beginning of her love affair with wine.
“I was always going to be a viticulturist,” she told us, “but I took a vintage position in 2001 in Hawke’s Bay to “see” what happens once the fruit leaves the vineyard. I never left the winery after that –- I was hooked.”
Nicky started out as an Assistant Winemaker at the Mission in Hawkes’ Bay, then jetted off for vintages in Oregon, British Columbia, France and finally back to Marlborough in 2006. Ask her for her favourite part of winemaking? “When you see the final product going down the bottling line and you think ‘I did that’! It makes you proud.”
The Parish family continued to grow grapes for the best producers in New Zealand for 10 years, but yearned for greater security and their own name on the label. With Nicky now a seasoned winemaker, Angels gave her the amazing opportunity to work with and learn from her father.
“The challenge for a small producer is showing your wines to people who want to experience something you believe in. Naked Wines gives us the opportunity, uninhibited, to bring affordable, quality wines to people who'll really appreciate it.”
To this day, Angels allow Nicky to grow the business and spend time with her young family. With Peter taking a well-earned governorship role, Nicky’s picking up the baton managing more of the business. Although Peter is never far away (the local golf course) if she needs some advice!
“I can’t reiterate enough how grateful I am for how much Angels have changed our lives, especially for Mum and Dad. They’ve worked hard all their lives and now they can enjoy a secure retirement and I get to continue making evocative wines from the region I love”
