About the wine
Elegant & refined Heathcote Shiraz.
-
Bart Van Olphen’s B.V.O Blauw Heathcote Shiraz returns to the Naked shelves! This is a Dutchman’s take on Australia’s most widely planted grape with a nod to the European syrah style.
-
Beautifully perfumed, bright, medium-weight shiraz with ripe red cherry fruits and spicy notes finishing with dusty fine-grain tannins. Yummm! Super-premium grapes of this quality would normally go into wines valued at well over $40 a bottle!
-
The single-vineyard Heathcote site located in the Mt Camel range is totally unique. The deep red, mineral rich soil dates back to the Cambrian era, 500 million years ago. The volcanic geology gives a distinct charry, smoky character to the shiraz.
Best before
Perfect to drink now or within the next 4-5 years. One of the loveliest aspects of BVO Blauw Shiraz is the perfume and vibrant fruit and these characters will give way to the spice and earth over time, so it really depends on how you like to drink your red wines.
Serving advice
It's not essential to decant this wine, you can simply crack and pour to enjoy the attractive aromatics. It will open up and evolve through the course of the bottle to reveal more spice and earthy tones. Or, if you would like to dust off the fancy decanter and glassware, this wine will definitely suit the occasion.
Food match
The BVO Blauw could pair really well with some twice cook Beef or Lamb ribs, served with some roasted winter vegetables. It would equally stand up to a succulent, fillet steak from the char grill and some classic spuds on the side. One of Bart's favourites from Holland is the stoofvlees - a rich, wintery beef stew - BVO Blauw would go perfectly with that.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Bart Van Olphen
- Bart van Olphen’s wine journey is totally unique. Born and raised among the windmills and tulips of his native Holland, he learned his winemaking craft in Germany’s Pfalz region, honed it in the USA, handmade mighty reds alongside the legend that is Steve Pannell for eight years in McLaren Vale before settling in Victoria.
- Bart is married to Kim Chalmers of the famed Chalmers vineyards and it’s from these excellent family-grown grapes that he sources the most delectable, pristine fruit to power his Angel-exclusive B.V.O range of deliciousness!
- Bart is very much a minimal interventionist winemaker: grow the best fruit, let it talk and stay hands off as much as possible. And with the huge array of Chalmers grapes available to choose from Bart is like a kid in a candy store!
