About the wine
A powerful Cabernet with delicious depth
The creation of some wines come about smoothly, and others really push a Winemaker’s abilities. This Cabernet proved to be the latter for Leighton Joy. As one of the 2020 Young Guns of Wine finalists, he rose to the task. Equipment issues meant this wine was given a tonne of extra attention, as Leighton meticulously (and admittedly with high stress levels) nurtured it through its development. His focus paid off with a truly powerful and complex Cabernet.
This has all the classic fruit flavours and layered textures of a Cabernet, but its chewy tannins are what make this drop truly memorable - and ironically, that was the very challenge Leighton was focused on preserving!
The tannins magnificently set up a home for the red cassis, blackcurrant and oak flavours. The end result is a rich, glorious combination. There are also hints of licorice which add a delicious depth and complexity to a lovely, layered red.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Leighton Joy
- Leighton’s eyes were opened to the idea of winemaking when he started working in his father's sultana vineyard. In 1999, his father and uncle went on to establish Pyren vineyard in the beautiful Victorian Pyrenees (now a critically acclaimed winery), and his winemaking journey began.
- Before long, Leighton had racked up crates of experience and multiple medals - including the Western Victoria Wine Challenge trophy for Best Shiraz and Best Wine. But running a small business is never plain sailing and in 2015, Pyren hit a rough spot that threatened to close its doors.
- Getting Naked changed everything for Leighton as thousands of Angels came to the rescue and tripled his wine sales overnight. Today, he continues to craft single-vineyard drops from the family’s precious vines, pouring endless amounts of honesty and integrity into each bottle. And in 2020 it earned him a spot on the Top 50 Young Guns of Wine list.
