Resourceful couple making small batch Tassie wonders
This canny couple from the Tamar Valley has captivated Angels with their Gypsy Caravan offerings of tiny volume, hand-made deliciousness. The name reflects freedom, the ‘wild’ way the wines are made and the close relationship they have with this pristine place.
Cynthea has been making wine magic for 23 years. Bitten by the wine bug when her parents moved from San Francisco to Tassie and planted their own vineyard, she ended up studying winemaking and wine marketing. Then the world became her vinous oyster!
It’s hard to find great Tasmanian wines by little family winemakers like these outside of cellar doors and fancy restaurants. The Feldheim's exclusive access to parcels of lovingly tended fruit from mature vines means their Tamar Valley tipples are the next level in quality and value. Angel support has been so powerful, they’ve been able to take over the family vineyard - the first Tasmanian cellar door - and return it to its former glory.

Cynthea & David Feldheim's Story
Cynthea fell under wine’s wondrous spell from a young age when her parents moved from San Francisco to Tassie and planted their own vineyard. She’s now notched up 33 vintages and 23 years of grappling the noble grape.
Her career took her around the world and across the country - she’s even worked with Stuey Bourne in the Barossa. But starting a family meant a high level corporate wine job was near impossible, so she headed back to the family vineyard to consider her options to make her own wine, her way.
Getting Naked in 2014 meant she and husband David could finally lease a winery and make their independent dream a reality. And so Gypsy Caravan was born. The name reflects freedom, the wild nature of winemaking and the close relationship they have with mother nature. Not to mention their celebration of life and general revelry.
But it’s not all fun and games. “There's a good deal of hard work in winemaking, and the grape waits for no one,” says Cynthea. “Mother nature is your boss, and anything can change at a moment's notice.” But they wouldn’t have it any other way!
Since those early days, Angel support for their wines has been so powerful, they’ve been able to take over the family vineyard - the first Tasmanian cellar door - and return it to its former glory. And a recent scholarship to study biodynamic vineyard conversion in NZ has cemented Cynthea’s determination to create a more sustainable practice.
The next step? Continuing the family legacy and designing a winery just the way she likes it. It’s a smart move - Tasmania’s enviable growing climate means it’s fast becoming one of Australia’s top wine regions.
Of course, the Feldheims have known that all along. And now, so do you.
