Proud 5th generation grower and winemaker from Victorias Great Western wine region
Hamish is a proud 5th generation grower and winemaker from one of Australia’s oldest wine families. He helped build Best’s Wines into a James Halliday 5-star winery, making multi award-winning wines.
Like most dyed-in-the-wool wine kids, Hamish started out scrubbing barrels and pruning hundreds of unruly vines. As the years passed, his responsibilities grew and he learnt the business inside out and back to front, including a vintage in France to round out his experience.
Hamish loves the whole process of making world-class wine and its connection with a place, but it's the people who drink his wine that really make his day.

Hamish's Story
Hamish is a proud 5th generation grower and winemaker who helped build Best’s into a James Halliday 5-star winery, making multi award-winning wines.
He comes from one of Australia’s oldest wine families, with a heritage reaching back 128 years. In 1893, whilst Australia was in the grip of financial crisis, Hamish’s forefather left Melbourne and bravely bought a winery in a small hilly corner of Victoria. As the years sped by, the business went from strength to strength, making the Thomsons one of Victoria’s most successful wine dynasties.
In the early 1920s, the family snapped up Best’s Wines, one of Australia’s oldest wineries, and have been making elegant, top notch wine from its ancient vines ever since.
Like most dyed-in-the-wool wine kids, Hamish started small.
As a youngster, he was dished out the boring winemaking chores and spent his out-of-school hours scrubbing barrels and pruning hundreds of unruly vines.
As the years passed, he was rewarded with bigger responsibilities across the whole winemaking process. He got to know the business inside out and back to front, including a vintage in France to round out his experience.
Best’s is now firmly established in Halliday’s Wine Companion guide to notable Aussie wines. It’s even picked up his Wine of the Year and Best Value Winery awards in the past 5 years.
That’s one heck of a heritage!
So we’re pleased as punch he’s joined team Naked!
Hamish loves the whole process of making world-class wine and its connection with a place, but it's the people who drink his wine that really make his day. He knows he’s joining a vibrant, supportive community here that will embrace him and his wine and tell him honestly what they think.
“I’m looking to share what I do with like-minded people that enjoy well-made, easy-to-drink wines” he told me.
It’s as simple as that.
