Olivia Tate's Story
Olivia Tate’s surname is, of course, synonymous with Margaret River.
Evans & Tate is an iconic Australian label, hailing from the area. Olivia’s grandfather John was one of the label’s founders, pushing Shiraz vines deep into the rich soil. A pioneering producer, he was told at the time it was “an abomination to the region.” He countered that by going on to win more than a few international awards.
Not a bad way to prove the critics wrong.
Olivia completely embraced the wealth of knowledge her family had to offer.
“As soon as I could, I started working with them,” she says. “I was brought up in a heavily wine focused family. From age seven, my parents and grandparents would encourage me to try every wine, to help build my palate.”
Naturally, her own creativity and ambition has now led to her branching out even further, extending that Tate footprint on the region and stamping her own flair.
This is her second label for Naked Wines. Olivia’s also working with international producers too (including an Italian range with Emiliano Secco, which has been snapped up by Angels.)
“I don’t think you can ever know too much,” Olivia explains. “I’ve always wanted to take every opportunity, to keep learning and meeting people and I’m grateful I have because it’s led me here.”
Of course, her wines feature fruit from the Tate’s property. No one else has access to the fruit – which is proof positive of what exceptional attention to detail can deliver. These wines are a wonderful expression of the region at its best.
Narrative uses animals on the wine’s labels, which represents Olivia’s home and self, plus the natural world around her.
Nature is an integral, symbiotic part of Margaret River. The salt on the breeze, the wind through the tall trees, the dew on the ripe grapes at dawn.
“The natural world we see in our winemaking teaches us the value and importance of patience, adaptability and persistence,” she explains. “The animals depicted on the labels possess these characteristics, as well as tradition and curiosity.”
Guiding her throughout the process of developing Narrative has been that consistent and genuine affinity with, and respect for, nature.
And to be clear - enjoying Narrative wines right now is precisely what Olivia is keen for you to do. “My grandfather used to say, ‘Great wine isn’t meant to sit in a cellar, it is meant to be shared,’ and so that is what I want Angels and myself to do, via Naked Wines - share great wine,” Olivia says.
Sounds like the perfect plan!
