About the wine
Beautifully balanced, cool climate Shiraz
- This cool climate Shiraz hails from a vineyard in Robe, where winemaker Anna Hooper first made wine back in 2005. She has deliberately taken a hands-off approach to the wine, allowing careful grape selection to shine through.
- South Australia’s Robe is a small area, and wines from here are unique and hard to get your hands on. They also produce a very elegant peppery note, which is so welcome in an elegant Shiraz like this one.
- With fresh aromas of blueberries and raspberries, there’s also that delicious black pepper smell, along with a hint of mocha. As you sip, there’s a lovely intensity from the fruit. The tannins are well balanced, leaving soft, lingering flavours in your mouth between every welcome sip.
Best before
The vibrance of this wine makes me want to drink it straight away. It can be cellared for those who choose to.
Serving advice
As with all wines, they are best consumed within a couple of days. I don't bother with decanting unless the wine needs it and this one doesn't.
And a hot tip from a fussy wine drinker - store red wines in the fridge overnight if you're not going to get through the whole bottle as they stay much fresher. Let them warm up again before consuming of course.
Food match
ItÂ’s a great food partner this wine. Try pasta with mushrooms, olive oil, thin slices of cured wagyu beef, wine and cracked pepper. Put it all back in at the end with the pasta and a bit of butter and let the past crispen a bit. I often sprinkle some flat leaf parsley and roasted pepitas, sunflower seeds or flaked almonds for texture. The peppery flavours bring out those same flavours in the wine beautifully. Serve with shaved parmesan cheese.
Well, thatÂ’s what I did last night and no one complained.

Meet the winemaker - Anna Hooper
Anna Hooper is back as a Naked Winemaker in her own right and it’s her love of the ocean, surfing and exploring that gives her Obelisk range an edge. She believes the Limestone Coast is a prime location for sourcing grapes.
She's not all talk. Anna is also highly accomplished, having been named Rural Woman of the Year, inducted into the Business Women's Hall of Fame, and named a Top 10 Young Gun of Wine.
Her daughter Grace will be joining Anna in this next chapter. After an end to the formal partnership with Derek, where she made wines under a large portfolio of brands, Obelisk is now her sole focus. With shared passions and a whole lot of knowledge, it’s a perfect pairing for success.
